Bioreactor Technology to Lessen Garbage Problems

To lessen the fast-increasing garbage problem of the municipality of Cavite, Hon, Mayor Jenny A. Barzaga of Dasmarinas, Cavite, with the support of DOST CALABARZON, through the Provincial S&T Center (PSTC) of Cavite, acquire a bioreactor facility developed by the Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI).

Mayor Bargaza got P1M financial support through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading (SETUP). The said amount is used to manufacture two, one-tonner bioreactor units for the municipality.

The project aims to use the composting facility as an alternative solution to the fast-increasing garbage problem of the municipality.

Through the bioreactor, municipality’s market wastes can be converted into an income generating enterprise that will help not only the residents but also local farmers. It will make widely available low-priced organic fertilizer. The production site will also serve as demonstration area for DOST developed technology.

Late last year, the two units of the bioreactor were completed and transferred at the Materials Recovery Facility of Dasmarinas. Initial assessment was conducted by DOST-ITDI. PSTC-Cavite has scheduled conduct of training courses on the use of the facility this year.

With this project, Caviteños believe that their garbage problems can be minimized. [via pia.gov.ph]
