GLEAM: Eluding Perceptual Errors in Driving

GLEAM (Glaring Light Emission Auto-Minimizer): Eluding Perceptual Errors in Driving. The rapid evolution of technology shows a rapidly changing world. Cars are among the most common indicators of advancement benefiting the super busy people. However, advancements do not warrant freedom from accidents. Research shows that glare is a common cause of errors in driving. Humans normally adapt to light levels. When a bright light suddenly appears, visibility is affected. This problem with glare is encountered at nighttime when the driver is adapted to lower brightness.

Glare headlight Emission Auto-Minimizer (GLEAM) a modified twelve volts device was mounted in a car to prove if it actually prevents car accidents especially at nighttime. This device is a light sensor which, upon detection of high-intensity light, stops current from flowing to the high-beam and allows current to pass through the low-beam. This means that in the event that two automobiles converge the risk of glare is prevented as the car automatically switches low-beam. A prototype of the device was made with ten sensitivity levels. Glare Test and Extraneous Variables Tests were conducted using different sensitivities. The prototype was demonstrated to prevent glare effectively from sensitivities five to ten depending on the driver. GLEAM was also proven not to detect luminosity from posts perpendicular to the direction of the sensor. Therefore, the device is ideal for use in driving at nighttime to reduce glare.
