Production and Formulation of Personal Care Products

Last October 8-9, in cooperation with DTI (Department of Science and Technology), DOST-Siquijor (Department of Science and Technology), sponsored a Training on Personal Care Products Formulation" (shampoo making, liquid hand wash, cream, lotion, & other products).

The training was held at Dapdap Sunset Grill, Pangi, Siquijor, which aspired at providing technical know-how, especially to women's group, on the production/formulation of personal care products.

 
Seaweed Farming Project

In coordination with Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Sagip Likas Yamang Dagat ng Bataan (Salba) works on seaweed farming in the waters of Mariveles town for livelihood and to fight sea pollution.

Susan Capuli, auditor and coordinator of Salba said that the group first planted seaweeds in the waters off barangays Poblacion and Lucanin worth P2.4 million in 2006, which is funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

 
Killer Snail as Pain Killer

Snails which are known to be "palay" killer of the farmers are now presented as pain killer, commercially known as Prialt.

Prialt, which is discovered by Dr. Baldomera M. Olivera, is taken from cone snail's venom which contains conotoxins. Dr, Baldomera and his team from University of Utah found out that the cone of venomous marine snails characterized several dozen neurotoxins. These neurotoxins are now widely used in neuroscience research.

Way back in the year 2002, Olivera's team identified the analgesic-like qualities of conopeptide from the cone's snail. An active ingredient called Ziconotide was found and later was made accessible to the public with a trade name: Prialt.

 
DOST Highlights Innovation and Leadership through Science Awards

DOST (Department of Science and Technology) emphasized innovation and leadership through Science awards as it sets its cash prizes for the winners of the 2nd Gawad LIDER (Leadership and Innovations for Development and Reforms in Science Education) Award.

Individuals and/or groups with sustained exemplary leadership in the field of science education and who have developed and introduced science and technology-based innovations or inventions to advance science education in the country are encouraged to submit their application.

 
Silkworm Egg Production

Last January, Philippine Textile Research Institute Benguet Office (PTRI-Benguet Office) was absorbed and reconstituted as Department of Science and Technology-Benguet.

Regardless of of the absorbance and reconstitute, the office, which is now DOST-Benguet, guaranteed that egg production for the rearing of silkworm will still continue even if it is no longer its mandate.
