Spearheaded by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) 8 through its Regional Head Carina Z. Santiago in coordination with other government institutions, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), region 8 also launched the veggie-enriched squash noodles and squash breads. The launching was held last July 3 at the Robinson's Place, Tacloban City which is also the formal launching of Nutrition Month. Under this project, DOST Regional Director Edgardo M. Esperancilla bared that in region 8 there are manufacturers of veggie-enriched squash bread and noodles. In Tacloban City, he disclosed, some of these manufacturers are Beamarish Bakeshop, and Our Daily Bread Bakeshop and Snack House; while in Ormoc City they have the Mayongs Bakeshop; and the JM Foods in San Isidro. |

A research is done in University of the Philippines Los Baños by Professor Menandro Acda, which is funded by the Ford Conservation and Environmental Grants programme. The research is being heralded as economically and environmentally sound. Acda has created a new composite building board made of chicken feathers that could be a major breakthrough for the construction industry in Asia. The new material would be resistant to the region's armies of termites, and could also solve a major environment problem in the Philippines by providing a way to dispose of millions of kilos of waste feathers each year. |

Aimed to assist small It- based businesses, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has inaugurated a P10-million technopark inside the University of the Philippines Diliman campus. Secretary Estrella Alabastro of Science and Technology said that the Open Technology Business Incubator will provide a nurturing environment for new IT-based businesses that transform new technologies into useful and commercially viable services. |

Now, Internet savvy kids will have a more fun-filled way of learning. Recently, Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-AST) and the Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) launched Courseware Website at the Philippine Science High School, Davao City. Courseware Website is a virtual classroom that features interactive lessons in math and science. The website features interactive and animated science and mathematics modules released in 2006 in CD format and now are made available online. Students, teachers, parents and individuals looking for a novel way to teach and learn about science and math can log on for free. |
