The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) had given training about high end charcoal making using agri-based wastes to 45 people. According to Dexy Catacutan of DOST-Kalinga, the technology is being applied in drum-charcoaling through a fabricated iron drum material used in converting twigs, rice hulls, saw dust, dried coconut shells, bamboo scraps wood planks into finished irregular charcoal cuts. The charcoal cuts are pulverized and mixed with binding agents like corn starch before pouring this to the briquetting machine to make charcoal briquettes. |

Due to the increasing numbers of dengue fever cases in the Philippines, DOST (Department of Science and Technology) has developed mosquito trap which will be available in the market soon. The said mosquito trap has productively passed laboratory tests and will be subjected to field tests in 500 households in Quezon City and 500 households in Marikina City next week.
According to Science Secretary Mario Montejo, if results will be positive, the mosquito trap will be rolled all over the country. |

Alfredo Gonzales, a 60 years old, sugar planter, owns a 40-hectare farm which was buried under 20 feet of lahar when Mt. Pinatubo erupted in 1991. His farm is now the site of the first mechanized production facility for organic fertilizer in the country. The farm produces 500 fertilizer bags which can be sold for P240 each. |

The Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization in Muñoz City proved that the carbonized rice hull is a good element and a low-cost alternative in making biomass heater. Based from its researches, when mixed with cement, CRH contains 87% of silica that can clasp temperature ranging from 700 degrees centigrade to 750 degrees centigrade. It was in 2008 when the Department of Agriculture through the Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension (now PHilMech) started the execution of the mechanical drying support to farm clusters. The improved flatbed dryers are dispersed to qualified irrigators associations. |

To develop the processing and handling of mussels (Asian green mussels) chips, deeply fried snack, DoST Calabarzon (Department of Science and Technology-Calabarzon) through the Cavite Provincial Science and Technology Center, granted Virgie Lopez, financial assistance for the acquisition of packaging and sealing equipment. |
